BOSTON (AP) — Top-seeded John Isner advanced to the second round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory Tuesday over fellow American Wayne Odesnik.

The 6-foot-10 Isner rode his powerful serve, at one point topping 137 mph. He had 19 aces and only two double-faults.

The highest-ranked American at No. 12 this week, he was a two-time champion on Newport's grass courts in 2011 and 2012.

Defending champion Nicolas Mahut of France, the No. 4 seed, defeated Facundo Arguello of Argentina, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

The 29-year-old Isner is the No. 1 seed at Newport for the third time in four years. He had a 13-match winning streak at the Hall of Fame Championships snapped by Lleyton Hewitt in last year's semifinals.
